We are delighted to launch our new series of occasional articles, Our Makers and introduce our first featured maker, Ella McCreath, the creative force behind one of our favourite artisan producers, Ella + Grace Ceramics. Based in Galloway, on the south west coast of Scotland where she has lived and worked for the past 24 years, Ella specialises in creating timeless modern ceramics.
Having originally graduated with a Fine Art degree in sculpture, today Ella focuses on hand-thrown ceramics, favouring classic lines and forms. Ella's contemporary influenced pieces are usually glazed in gloss or matt white, while she often uses contrasting materials such as leather or wood, adding tactile and functional elements to her ceramics. Working in the peace and quiet of her rural studio, a walk away from a secluded sweeping bay with ever-changing seascapes, each beautifully crafted piece is hand thrown by Ella.
"I tend to use white earthenware clay," Ella explains, sharing insight into her practice and inspirations. "I love the idea of having simple, useful pieces on the kitchen table or around the home. Something unique that can be handled and treasured. Forever pieces that make everyday life just that little bit more stylish."
We have added one of Ella's simply beautiful ceramics - the circular soap dish - to our Rory & Ruby organic In the Mood Gift Box
Take a look and see if you love it as much as we do! You can discover more about Ella's work on her website
